An AI writing coach that gets you to a finished first novel
Write In Yellow takes a complete beginner to a finished first novel in 90 days, with every word in it their own. It interviews the writer, builds the outline with them, shows good prose by example, teaches craft through feedback, and keeps them writing until the draft is done.
This page is a published snapshot. The working version, with the live partner tracker, is a private Claude doc.
The opportunity
The money is in helping people finish a novel, not in selling them AI writing tools.
| Signal | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Huge demand | 35% of US adults have considered writing a book or started one (ProWritingAid survey); over half of Brits would like to (Fife Today) |
| Beginners stall; they don't fail on prose | They cite motivation (24%), time (19%) and momentum (11%) as the main barriers (ProWritingAid survey) |
| Outcomes earn far more than tools | Self-Publishing School charges $6,000–$28,000 per programme; Sudowrite, the best-known AI fiction tool, is estimated at about $1.8M a year in revenue |
| November is already taken | NaNoWriMo peaked at 413,295 participants in 2022 and closed in April 2025. ProWritingAid's free Novel November now reports about 100,000 writers, and Dabble and World Anvil run their own challenges |
Who it's for
The launch market is people writing their first romance novel. Romance accounts for roughly 40–45% of Amazon ebook sales (Just Publishing Advice), its readers are voracious, and its structure is clear enough to coach.
- First: first-time romance writers, many of them heavy romance readers who want to try writing.
- Next: other strongly structured genres such as cosy mystery, romantasy and fantasy.
- Later: writers who have finished one draft and want to improve, plus a memoir-as-a-gift offer modelled on Storyworth.
How it works
Stages 1–3 set the book up. Stages 4 and 5 repeat for every chapter, with less example prose each time, until the writer is working on their own. See the screen-by-screen mock-ups.
Positioning and brand
The joke gets attention; the second line wins over writers who distrust AI.
- AI-assisted, never AI-generated. 97% of UK novelists are extremely negative about AI writing whole novels (Cambridge study). Amazon has been removing undisclosed AI-generated books since April 2026 (KDP enforcement). Writing coached this way needs no disclosure.
- Why yellow: the yellow legal pad, the highlighter, the editor's mark. It is a writer's colour with history behind it, from Victorian yellowbacks to The Yellow Wallpaper.
- Domains: writeinyellow.com, .co.uk and .app were all unregistered on 6 October 2026. Also register rightinyellow.com, because people who hear the name may spell it that way.
Business model
Price it as a programme with a finish line, between AI tools and human coaching. All prices are starting hypotheses to test.
| Offer | Price (proposed) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Free start | £0 | Interview, premise and the first chapter outline |
| The 90-Day Draft | £149–£299 one-off | The full programme from outline to finished first draft |
| Monthly | £19 / month | The same tools with no deadline, for slower writers |
| Finished-draft add-ons | [PRICE] | A human editor's review and help preparing the book for publishing |
For comparison: Sudowrite costs $10–$59 a month and Self-Publishing School $6,000 and up.
Risks and open questions
- Beginners drop out. Completion is the product, so measure weekly words written and chapters finished from day one.
- Writers distrust AI. One leaked AI-generated chapter would undo the promise that every word is yours. Example prose must stay short and must always be rewritten by the writer.
- The joke could make it look unserious. Test the slogan against a plain version with real writers before spending on it.
- Trademark not yet checked. Search the UK IPO and USPTO registers for software classes 9 and 42.
- The market figures are rough. Sudowrite's revenue is a third-party estimate, and the Self-Publishing School figures come from older reporting.
Launch retreat at Loch Rannoch
A paid, tutored retreat for 10–20 first-time novelists is the first live test: paying guests, a published author's credibility, and a ready-made first community. About £895 for four nights, including three months of the app; break-even at about 7 guests on illustrative costs.
The full plan, with comparable prices and a break-even calculator, is on the Rannoch launch retreat page.
Partner tracker
Member-led clubs and commercial-fiction authors come first; arts-funded bodies are likely to be cautious about AI. Status as of 6 October 2026.
